Projects - Jura Subsea Control System

Tierney Strachan provides Subsea Control System for the Total Jura development

The Jura project was a fast track subsea development with discovery in November 2006 to first gas in May 2008. Tierney Strachan provided the subsea control system in conjunction with Dril-Quip Inc.

The Jura development consists of 2 wells (Jura 1 and Jura 2) with a single structure (Jura Integrated Manifold Towhead) housing the choke manifolds, multiphase flow meters (MPFMs) and cryogenic spools. Production fluids are routed to Alwyn North via a 3km bundle tying into the existing Forvie Manifold. Due to the high pressure nature of the Jura wells it was necessary for a subsea HIPPS system to be employed to protect the existing Forvie flowline. The HIPPS system and supporting control systems were also housed within the Jura Manifold structure.

Tierney Strachan's scope of work included:

  • Development of the DeltaV PCS software to accommodate the expansion of the Forvie system to encompass the Jura wells, the HIPPS system and the introduction of a new chemical injection unit;
  • Modification of existing topside control equipment to accommodate the increase in subsea communications, additional topside signals and increase in third party devices. Provision of new topside controls cabinet to house the Yokogawa HIPPS control package and Oceantech Workover ESD system;
  • Provision of a new Subsea Power and Communications Unit (SPCU) for the HIPPS system - housing the step-up transformers for subsea power and the subsea fibre-optic communication modems.
