Projects - Total Alwyn Control System

Ongoing modification support to Total E&P UK plc Alwyn Platform Emerson DeltaV Process Control System

During 2002/2003 the Fire and Gas, Emergency Shutdown and Process Control Systems on the Alwyn Platform were replaced under the Alwyn Systems Upgrade (ASU) project.

The systems now comprise ICS Trusted equipment for the F&G and ESD systems, and an Emerson DeltaV system for the Process Control System (PCS) and as the operator interface to the ESD and F&G systems.

When the system was upgraded, the PCS included over 9,000 configured tags making the system one of the largest DeltaV systems at the time. The platform Management Information System (MIS) was also replaced, comprising an integrated OSI PI system.

Support for the system continues to be provided by Tierney Strachan including:

  • Detailed design, testing and implementation of system modifications supporting changes to the platform process, shutdown and fire and gas systems;
  • Integration of third party system through serial communication links such as ABB Advant control system for MGI compressor and Roxar flare gas flow computer system.

Tierney Strachan also provide support and maintenance for the system covering system software and licences; engineering tools; system documentation etc.

Over the years, Tierney Strachan have provided support for three separate version upgrades to the DeltaV PCS, from the original installation of version 5.3 through to the latest version (12.3), ensuring that the upgrade proceeded with minimal plant downtime.
